De La Soul’s Plug 1 & Plug 2 present First Serve [Videos]

When I first peeped the title of this project, I had so many questions: Why are they going by “De La Soul’s Plug 1 & Plug 2”? Where’s Plug 3 (Mase)? Why is this coming out now, when we have been patiently waiting for the third installment of De La Soul’s “Art Official Intelligence”? And basically, just what IS “First Serve“? An album? Mixtape? New group?

According to Duck Down Records, which is putting out the project in North America (out on Pias in all other territories),

‘First Serve’ is many things, but at its heart it is the story of two young boys from Queens, New York with big dreams and larger rhymes. Two friends, Deen Whitter (aka Plug 2 / Dave) and Jacob ‘Pop Life’ Barrow (aka Plug 1/ Pos), friends from seventh grade, are by their own admission, “different, but the differences seem to complement everything we do.” Their name ‘First Serve’ comes from their motto, “First come, First Serve, get what you deserve.” …

The ‘First Serve’ album tells the story of two dreamers in a basement struggling to start their musical career, the battles they face, through to the point that they eventually release their debut single, ‘make it big’

After watching the first 3 videos -2 skits and 1 song – I have come to realize that First Serve is more than a group, or an album, but is an animated movie and soundtrack, a story told through the lens of Plug 1 & Plug 2‘s brand of hip hop, directed at the youth, but relatable for adults as well.

Here is the first skit, ‘Mrs. Whitter’, which sets up the story, second skit, ‘We Made It’ and the first single off the project “Must Be the Music”. Sit back, relax and enjoy, it plays like a tv show.
