QAASIM MIDDLETON on American Idol! (Video Playlist) #MCMI #TeamQaasim

*Update*
Here is Qaasim’s latest performance as a member of the top 9! The studio version of him singing “Addicted to love” is now available on iTunes!

* UPDATE: This week was a nail-biter as Qaasim was not voted through, but gave an amazing performance (Harry Connick Jr said the best performance of the night!) and the judges used their ONE & ONLY save. The audience was going crazy! Qaasim really spazzed out, blacked out on this one. Win or lose I think he knew he had given it his all and emotion took over as he dropped the mic, Rakim style at the end. On American Idol! Mic dropped! I’m done. Lol. Please tell your friends to vote for Qaasim all weekend until Tuesday, by going to AmericanIdol.com/vote, using the Fox Now app and google search American Idol Vote and vote through Google. You can vote all the ways, 20 votes each. You can also call 866 436 – 5708 20 times and text message 8 to 21523 20 times, but only for a couple of hours. The online voting goes until Tuesday.

Thank you for your support!  Here is his life saving performance!  #TeamQaasim #MCMI

Qaasim-Middleton-570

If you’ve been watching AMERICAN IDOL lately, you may have noticed that one of the contestants, Qaasim Middleton, looks a little like MCMI co-founder, Keith “Wildchild” Middleton (of STOMP, HYDRA, The PLAGUE, etc). They both have long dread locks, both play percussion, guitar and other instruments, both beatbox and both move with craziest energy and charisma onstage. Well, there’s a reason for that! Qaasim is Keith’s son!

Qaasim is a super talented musician, who sings, raps, dances, acts, writes his own songs and produces his own music. In between High School and College (he is enrolled in The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music) Qaasim decided to take a few months off to audition for and try to win American Idol and so far, he has been doing very well.

Qaasim-hopeful

Qaasim has been on an artists path since he first joined father’s group HYDRA onstage at a performance when he was just 2 years old, appeared on an episode of Sesame Street along with the cast of STOMP, at age 3, was chosen to be featured in the HBO documentary “Music In Me” at age 10, and became a cast member of the Nickelodeon hit tv show “Naked Brothers Band” from age 11 to 14. Since then Qaasim has been busy studying music at Laguardia High School, studying dance at Creative Outlet (an after school and summer arts institute in Brooklyn, NY) and honing his performing skills at weekly showcase events organized by his mother, Toni Seawright, a former pageant winner (the first black Miss Mississippi) and broadway actor/singer herself. So, you could say Qaasim has been preparing for this journey through American Idol all of his life.

All of the judges, Keith Urban, Jennifer “J-Lo” Lopez, Harry Connick Jr., and even one time guest judge, former Idol winner Adam Lambert, have been impressed with the  just turned 19 performer, since his audition. Each week they have lavished him with praise – J-Lo seems to be especially enthralled – as well as good advice, as they pass him through to the next round.

But now we are into the voting rounds, where America decides who goes home and who stays each week, by voting with text messages, phone calls and on the American Idol official website and voting app. This is where contestants really have to sing for their supper.

And that’s where YOU come in. Help Qaasim get to the top! This kid has what it takes to be America’s favorite. He is the truth, homegrown, Brooklyn funk. He is extremely humble and supportive of all the other hopefuls, cheering them on and encouraging them as well. He puts 110% into every song, every week, but if people don’t vote he won’t make it to the next round.

Here’s how to vote: Watch the show. Onscreen you will what number contestant he is that episode (for example, last week he was #8). You can call in your vote 20 times, send 20 text message votes, go onto Americanidol.com/vote or the FoxNow app. You can vote in all of the above ways, giving 20 votes each way. Calling and texting can be done from multiple devices.

Need to catch up? Missed one? Just wanna watch again? Here is every Qaasim performance so far in one place. Make sure to vote every way possible (20X each way) and follow Qaasim on Twitter & Instagram @QaasimOfficial – Thanks fam!

POUND CAKE (DRAKE/JAY Z) vs HOOD CAKE (The L.O.X) [POLL]

Pound Cake vs Hood CakeBy now you have most likely heard POUND CAKEDrake’s single featuring Jay Z all over the radio, in the clubs, etc. If you listen to mix tapes, underground, independent or SiriusXM stations you probably have also heard The L.O.X over the same beat on their HOOD CAKE Freestyle. I liked the original when I first heard it, but I personally believe The L.O.X bodied the track incredibly, leaving me with no further interest in hearing Drake or Jay on the song anymore. But I can listen to the HOOD CAKE version all day and not get tired of it.

But some of my colleagues over here at MCMIreport.com don’t agree. They say either the original holds up well and liek both tracks equally or they think that the original still holds reign, either for Drake’s contribution, Jay’s verse or both.

What do you think? Both tracks can be found after the jump, so you can listen before you cast your vote.

What Do You Think ?? Pete Rock And Lupe Fiasco Troy Sample (Poll)

Lupe Fiasco Pete RockLupe Fiasco hit’s us with a new record entitled “Around The Way”  (Freedom Ain’t Free), where the producer re-did the classic Pete Rock & CL Smooth record T.R.O.Y (They Reminisce Over You), which was a dedication to the Heavy D and The Boyz member Trouble T-ROY. The song has a message and is very positive, something we need in the culture right now. So with that being said, I was on twitter when I saw the legendary @TheRealPeteRock tweet

“No disrespect to Lupe Fiasco and I like him alot but T.R.O.Y should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made Outta anguish and pain. When it’s like that it should not be touched by no one. It’s so hard for folks to make original music, I possess that, but these dudes are scared of that and this is supposed to be HIP HOP? Man I’m a lupe fan and everything but TROY was my homie man. I think about him and Hev every fucking day!!!! Smh”….

And he continues to state that the producer should be ashamed of himself that the beat is “Wack”. So people, we will let you be the judge – do you think that T.R.O.Y is that classic that should have never been re-done or touched? Or, based on the positive message that Lupe is sending out on his song “Around The Way”, do you think it’s ok?  You decide.

Is Lupe wrong for touching the Classic T.R.O.Y ?
yes
No

PH Wins Magnum Live Large Project: Pronounced “NYC MVP” by Ludacris

PH and LUDACRIS

MCMI’s
own PH took first place in TROJAN and LUDACRIS‘ rap contest called “Magnum Live Large Project 2″, which had competitions in Detroit, San Francisco, Miami and NYC. The New York one was held at Highline Ballroom, on April 4th, 2011 and pitted 16 MCs against each other, not spittin’ battle raps like they do in GrindTime, but competing in three categories: a capella verse, freestyle off the dome and performance of an original song.

For those who don’t know, PH (formerly “Pumpkinhead”) is also a GrindTimeNow battler. PH was the GrindTime East Coast President for awhile, but passed the torch to current President Poison Pen, so that he could step in the ring a few more times. He also is a 2 time Braggin’ Rites title holder, 2 time EOW MC Challenge winner, EOW Challenge of Champions winner (he went against all the other champions and came out on top), came in 2nd in the infamous BLAZE Battle and has recently won battles in the GrindTIme and KOTD (King of the DOT) leagues, so he’s versatile and can compete in multiple formats.

Trojan’s “Magnum Live Large” Project is not an MC battle, but an “EMCEE COMPETITION”. What’s cool about it is you get to freestyle and also do one of your songs. Plus you spit accapela one round, so everyone definitely hears every word of your verse, with no beat to play a factor. Whether you’re nice off the top, can write a killer verse, or are really good at putting a song together, you get a chance to put your best foot - er, rhyme – forward. Besides MCing, there also were B-Boy , Graffiti and DJ elements and even an educational panel discussion. Check out the NYC Highlights video:

The  judges for the New York event were either MC’s or C.E.O’s of reputable Hip Hop companies, from East and West, North and South, so we had people who really knew what they were listening to. There was Opio from Souls of Mischief (Cali), Prince Po from Organized Konfusion (Queens), J-Live (Philly), Danny Castro from the Legendary Lyricist Lounge (Brooklyn), Mad Illz, who reps Florida and is one of the C.E.O.’s of GrindTime, and R.A. the Rugged Man (Long Island). 14 hungry MC’s and one singer, who jumped in the contest to get some light, performed  their hearts out in hopes of winning the money and going to Miami to perform with Ludacris. The event was hosted by local host Posion Pen (GrindTime, Stronghold), and tour hosts Othello and Rahman Jamaal.

LUDA on the mic

All PH’s rounds were strong, obviously, or he wouldn’t have been able to win, but the performance of his song “Oxygen” (video after the jump) really rocked the crowd. From the beat to the hook to the subject matter, the audience showed a lot of love. PH’s delivery and stage skills from years of touring the States and abroad, allowed him to tear down the stage effortlessly for the New York crowd.

Videos of PH’s song “Oxygen” that he performed live that night, plus his a capella round, both of which have not been previously released, after the jump!
