MCMI REPORT: A Tribe Called Quest Perform “Can I Kick It” On Fallon

A Tribe Called Quest Perform “Can I Kick It” On Jimmy Fallon

A Tribe Called Quest Perform for the first time since 2013

A Tribe Called Quest has been a troubled group for years, breaking up, then reuniting for a couple of shows in 2013, then breaking up again. But now that the on-again off-again Tribe are reissuing their classic debut album People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, marking the 25th anniversary of the classic album, they have to make some appearances to promote the release. What better way to celebrate that to perform “Can I Kick It” on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon?

Jimmy is a true Hip Hop head (go look up his “History of Rap” series on Youtube if you don’t watch he show much), so it was a fitting venue for a re-union. This is their first performance as ATCQ since 2013 and their first performance together on television in 15 years (according to FADER).

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Phife said that it was Q-Tip who did not want the group to continue the tour.

“I don’t agree with it and we’re doing the fans a great injustice by not getting together and rocking, and that’s all I can really speak on as far as that goes.”” – Phife told Rolling Stone

I hope they can iron out whatever reasons Q-tip put a stop to their touring in 2013 (according to Phife), when they were supposed to open for Kanye West for the entire Yeezus tour. I know they have their disagreements, but I think they are such a classic group that they could sustain their own tour, headlining and adding fellow Native Tongues artists, like De La Soul, Jungle Brothers and even smaller acts such as the Bush Babies. In fact, they could call it the “Native Tongues Tour”. That would be hot! Am I onto something here or am I just fantasizing?

SLAUGHTERHOUSE: Glass House [download] + Tour Info

Slaughterhouse is backFor the title of this next album, Slaughterhouse is sticking’ to the script, the “house” metaphor. They had Slaughterhouse, On The House and Welcome to: Our House. Sonically, their formula is simple: hard beats with four of the most lyrical wordsmiths each trying to outdo one another non every track. With the exception of “Goodbye” off of Our House in 2012, which was about loss of a loved one (remix featuring Fat Joe dedicated to Chris Lighty), for the most part, the quartet’s content has been 1 part street, 1 part slick pimp sh-t, 2 parts extra lyrical bravado.

But now on this new album, ‘Glass House‘, due out later this year, Joe Budden, Royce Da 5’9″, Crooked I and Joell Ortiz – are going to get personal. Crooked I told VIBE in a recent interview:

“We were going through different things personally in our life and it just shines through the music,” said Crooked. “That’s what’s going to make it relatable to the fan. It’s everyday struggles, everyday pain, everyday obstacles. You’re going to go through a journey when you listen to this album.”

Glass House will be executive produced by Just Blaze, but that doesn’t mean he is handling all the production. Just has recruited J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Cardiak, AraabMuzik and Illmind already and it is rumored DJ Premier may contribute to the album as well.

Slaughterhouse is currently on their Glass House Tour. I dare you to throw stones!!

Ultramagnetic MC’s – “The Critical Beatdown Tour” Europe, Summer 2013

ultramagnetic MCS logoWhen I was a young pup, growing up in the Golden Era of Hip Hop, ULTRAMAGNETIC MC’s dropped a single that blew my mind and literally changed my life. Up until then I knew I wanted to rhyme, but it was the song Ego Trippin’ that made me really take notice to the scratching and the production. the beat was so funky, the breakbeat, the baseline, the synth stabs and the scratches on the chorus made me want to some day also produce and DJ. I am sure countless artists have similar stories of inspiration from this seminal pioneering Hip Hop group that also was the first (that I know of) that had rhymes that didn’t – well, rhyme – not always at least.

So I got real exited when I saw that ULTRAMAGNETIC MC’s are on a European Tour, marking the 25th anniversary of that first album “CRITICAL BEATDOWN” with 10 shows

The Ultramagnetic MC’s have come back together to give Hip Hop Fans all across the globe what they are missing, a true authentic hip-hop show! This tour is not only for the fans they made 25 years ago but also serves as an introduction to those of a younger generation who may have never heard of them, showing them where their favorite rappers got their style from!
