SUBSTANTIAL - MADE IN MARYLAND (produced by ODDISEE)

Plague-member and MCMI affiliate MC Substantial teams up with Mello Music Group’s fellow DMV native, the producer Oddisee for Made In Maryland, the first official single off his long awaited album, The Past Is Always Present In The Future. While Substantial spent a lot of time in New York early in his career , the song is an ode to Maryland, where he once again resides since he returned to his home state several years ago. If you are a Substantial fan then you must know Steph the Sapphic Songstress and DJ Jav, who are frequent collaborators with the prolific MC. Avoiding samples, the scratches and cuts you hear are off of vocals from Joe.D.

When ef@mm member QN5 Music’s Tonedeff heard the song, he was quoted as saying “S#!t so hard, I’m about to move there!” (Sidenote: Stan please make more hard s#!t like this so Tone can move, lol. Thanks.)

MCMI RECORDS: Chordz Cordero & Sir Manley present The HighBred LP [Full Album]

MCMI RECORDS: Chordz Cordero & Sir Manley present The HighBred LP

The “HighBred” consists of two MC’s, Chordz Cordero (Jamaica Queens, NY) and Sir Manley (Muskegon, MI). The HighBred LP is their first project presented to the world, a joint effort from Intaphaze Records, Man@Work Productions and MCMI Records. The LP brings you back to a time where music was simple: good music, good lyrics, good choruses. What more could you ask for?

Sir Manley (left) & Chordz Cordero (right) are “HighBred”

The best way to describe the album is Soul + Hip-Hop, something the group likes to call “Soul Hop. On it, Sir Manley and Chordz Cordero trade verses, while Chordz and a few guest artists sing beautifully on the hooks. The beats and music, provided by Boonie Mayfield are soulful Boom Bap, while the lyrical content can be described as truthful and poetic, yet still gritty and hardcore, and at times spiritual or soul searching, as the duo explore topics such as life, love and the struggle to remain original, in an era of clones.

Besides Chordz, Manley and Boonie Mayfield, the album is blessed with supporting artists who really add something to the project, such as Zo’ Kimoni, Venson Dix, Passionate Poet, Che’ V, Mickey Wallace, Trademark Massey and J’Mel Lu, the last of whom also did all the editing for their two videos thus far, How I See It, Original (We Remain) and is working on The Ride ft. Zo’ Kimoni, which is set to drop next. With three teams behind the project, Intaphaze, Man@Work and MCMI, the HighBred LP is gathering considerable buzz.

MCMI RECORDS: Chordz Cordero & Sir Manley present The HighBred LPThe song 3rd Stone Blues also offers a welcome visit from the late great PH aka Pumpkinhead. This song is just a sample of previously unreleased material that will be released on MCMI Records in the coming year from the legendary MC, Plague co-founder and former President of A&R at MCMI Records, who was actually responsible for bringing the label in on this project, right before his tragic passing.

The HighBred LP is available on iTunes, Amazon, Bandcamp, can be found on Spotify, Shazaam and all digital outlets. CD’s will be available soon.

MCMI REPORT: KRS-ONE – Now Hear This [Stream Album Free]

MCMI REPORT: KRS-ONE – Now Hear This [Stream Album Free] – OkayPlayer posted this two days ago, but I had to help spread the word. KRS is back with a new album and yes – he is tryna’ kick knowledge! You can Stream KRS-One’s Entire Album ‘Now Hear This’ right here!

The album boasts 18 tracks (well, the last one was given to his wife G Simone), several of which have potential to get lots of ‘underground airplay’ (shout out to the Lyricist Lounge).

My personal favorites are the song Drugs Won, about the failure of the “war on drugs” and the how conflicted we are as a nation, with some states having marijuana dispensaries and others locking people up for couple joints, and the song American Flag, which points out that the Confederate Flag was bad, but um, the American Flag was flown when Americans captured and sold slaves, and did all sorts of other unjust, despicable things. So were the flags of Spain and Germany and England and every country that has a flag. So take them all down, I guess, is the Blastmaster’s message.

I have to admit, Kris is still coming up with original ideas, new styles and concepts, like the track Soundman, which is actually dedicated to the soundman – the engineers at your show who keep the levels straight and allow your music to thump. Check out this teaser video of the song.

He also has a track where he raps the whole song over only a live guitar strumming chords, no beat at all. Let’s Go and Invaders are good tracks too. The Teacha is at his best when he has a message, which is pretty much throughout this whole album.

Stream it right here for free, skip through and see if you agree with my favorite tracks. If you like what you hear, you know how to show love – cha-ching!

PHAROAHE MONCH: Lost In Translation [ALBUM STREAM + DOWNLOAD]

Lost-in-Translation-Pharoahe-Monch

Did you know Pharoahe Monch just dropped an album, “Lost In Translation,” available for ‘name your price‘ on his Bandcamp page? I didn’t. Apparently, it is his Valentine’s Day gift to us all, released on Feb 14th and is much appreciated! (Thanks Pharoahe, we didn’t know you cared!)

The project is a retrospective collection of  previously released songs and features from 2000 to 2015, but it does include one new song “Home (HGH)” featuring Phonte’ and Tamisha. “Lost In Translation” is no joke, also featuring Jill Scott, Justin Timberlake, Will.I.Am, Mela Machinko, jazz great Robert Glasper and more!

Pharoahe-Monch

The theme of the collection is “Love” of course, hence the Valentine’s Day release date (kinda like MCMI’s “Love Is” mixtape, shameless self-plug). Stream “Lost In Translation” or download it for anything you want to contribute (drop some $, don’t be a moocher! lol). Remember, support the artists whose music you dig, or else don’t complain about what you hear on the radio.

For more info on Pharoahe, check out his website: Pharoahe.com.

De La Soul “GET AWAY” feat. The Spirit Of The Wu (AUDIO)

This song is nuts. The Hip Hop pioneers and innovators De La Soul continue their unstoppable career with this next classic “GET AWAY” featuring The Spirit of the Wu. Wu Tang Clan doesn’t literally perform on the track, but what they did was use samples of RZA and co. talking over an intro from Wu Tang Forever, so snippets of the Wu saying things like “this is Hip Hop right here, this is lyrics”, are seamlessly woven between De La’s lyrics. As De La pronounces “And like the Wu, we bring it to you in the purest form,” and “I just do this, I don’t have to.” Understood. And much appreciated!

“I’ve always loved the ‘Intro’ on Disc Two of Wu-Tang Forever – this erie sample with no beat, that they only talked over,” De La Soul’s Posdnuos said.”I stumbled on the original sample while crate digging one day, took it straight to the lab and added drums. The feel is definitely gritty, hard and sounds like a Wu record, so out of inspirational respect, we included featuring ‘The Spirit of the Wu’ in the song title.”

De La Soul’s “Your Welcome” drops in the Fall, but not before Wu Tang’s next album “A Better Tomorrow” drops in the Summer!
