MCMI REPORT: Shabaam Sahdeeq drops new album! Guest stars galore!

Okay, I admit that headline was just to grab your attention. It could have read “SHABAAM SAHDEEQ IS BACK WITH A BANGER OF AN ALBUM WITH BEATS THAT ARE CRAZY AND FEATURING PLANET ASIA, MASTA ACE, MILANO CONSTANTINE, RAS KASS, EL GANT, J57, NICK WIZ, EL DA SENSEI & MORE!” True, that’s a little too many words for the title, lol, but it’s accurate!

Timeless: Of The Collection is Shabaam’s first album in 3 years and is the first in a Timeless album series in four or five parts to be released over the next two years. First let’s talk about the beats. Sahdeeq describes them as that

“dirty-sounding SP-1200/MPC sample type ish I love to spit to”

Producers on the album include J57 (Westside Gunn, Joey Bada$$), Nick Wiz (Rakim, Cella Dwellas), DJ Doom (Blacastan, Nutso), Icerocks (Meyhem Lauren) and Arcitype (Vinnie Paz, Ruste Juxx). The production itself will have you nodding before the rhymes even start. The hooks, many scratch choruses, some spoken, a few sung, are all catchy and keep the song in your head. Among the notable featured MC’s on the album are Planet Asia, Milano Constantine (D.I.T.C), Masta Ace, Ras Kass, El Da Sensei (Artifacts) and El Gant to name a few.

Lyrically? Shabaam is on his A-game. Metaphors, stories of the past, wordplay, realism, battle-raps, it’s all in there. These are not freestyle joints, but well constructed, concept songs that will have you nodding your head in agreement. Whether you have been a fan since the Rawkus days or are a new listener you will be not be disappointed.

The album is available for stream and immediate purchase via Bandcamp and Audiomack currently and will be available via iTunes and all other digital retailers on January 13th.

Stream/buy Timeless: Of The Collection from the Bandcamp or Stream via Audiomack

Something From Nothing: The Art of Rap (Trailer)

tech n ice

Back in the days when i was a teenager… myself and GMS (MCMI co-owners) met Kevin Fitzgerald aka DJ Organic in central park at a summer stage concert. He was traveling around filming what would later become the critically acclaimed Documentary “Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme” We introduced him to the MC’s we knew, took him to the events we threw and frequented, helped plug him in to the new york Hip Hop scene and even made cameos along with PackFM, Mr.Mecc, Substantial & PH – our fellow crew members from “The Plague” Flash Forward over a decade and a new documentary with the same great feel, love (and many of the same artist) directed by Ice-T is about to hit the big screen….

Synopsis:
Ice-T takes us on an intimate journey into the heart and soul of hip-hop with the legends of rap music. This performance documentary goes beyond the stardom and the bling to explore what goes on inside the minds, and erupts from the lips, of the grandmasters of rap. Recognized as the godfather of Gangsta rap, Ice-T is granted unparalleled access to the personal lives of the masters of this artform that he credits for saving his life. Interspersed with the performers’ insightful, touching, and often funny revelations are classic raps, freestyle rhymes, and never before heard a cappellas straight from the mouths of the creators. What emerges is a better understanding of, and a tribute to, an original American art form that brought poetry to a new generation.

Evidence f. Raekwon & Ras Kass “The Red Carpet”

This joint knocks! Alchemist laced it and Evidence, Raekwon & Ras Kass get seriously busy. As soon as I heard the first 30 seconds I started searching for the artwork so I could put it up on the site. I am letting it play for the second time as I write this. Definitely worth the effort. If you;ve been sleeping on the album, this track should certainly wake you up.

Ras Kass Discusses “Nature of the Threat” 15 Years Later

raskass

I was over on TheBeeShine.com to check out their latest installment of “What inspires [name of artist here]” on MCMI friend and affiliate Poison Pen (I will post that in a minute), when I came across this interesting introspective piece in which Ras Kass talks about his classic song “Nature of the Threat“, why he made it and possible affects on his career, 15 years later.

Nature of the Threat” was one of the songs that solidified Ras Kass in my mind, as a serious artist, a wordsmith, a deep thinker and a super intellectual lyricist. In order to write that song, you have to be a spitter, yes, but you also need to be a scholar, know your history and not just read a textbook, but know what and where to research to find information that is not on the surface, but takes some digging. DJ’s dig in the crates? Well, Ras Kass digs in the books.

Check out Ras Kass’ newest video A.D.I.D.A.S (All Day I Dream About Spittin’) ft. Frankie Finch, (below). Listen to and purchase the entire digital album from his official BandCamp page.
