Substantial & The Other Guys: The Past… [EP]

If you haven’t heard the most recent Substantial project The Past … [EP] produced by The Other Guys, it’s really bangin’! I don’t know if you are more into previewing individual tracks, or if you are a ‘youtube’ person, so here’s both.

The Past… is the first of three EPs from Substantial, produced by HiPNOTT Records producer duo and fellow Maryland natives, The Other Guys, which will lead up to his leading up to his fourth full length album, The Past Is Always Present In The Future, dropping fourth quarter 2015. Besides The Other Guys’ production, the EP features Von Pea of Tanya Morgan, Substantial’s protegé, See King and cuts from DJ Jav.

You can get The Past… [EP] on the usual iTunes, Spotify, DJBooth, etc. BUT purchase the album on Bandcamp and you get a bonus download of Substantial’s 1999 demo tape entitled Before Sunrise: Pre-Hyde Out Demo ’99!  That’s 5 songs on The Past… + 5 songs on the Pre-Hyde Out Demo, for only $5. You can’t beat that.

SUBSTANTIAL on “Golden Lady” & Jill Scott tribute album (Exclusive Interview)

Baltimore artist SUBSTANTIAL prepares to release a Jill Scott tribute project, entitled “Jackin’ Jill”, built by “Jackin” music from various Jill Scott releases. I call him an artist, not just an MC, because besides working well with words, ‘Substizzle‘ also drew the sketch which is the cover art. Intrigued by this new project based entirely on the work of Jill Scott, I had to get at my Plague brother and ask him a few questions.

GMS: How did the idea of a Jill Scott Tribute album come about?

SUBSTANTIAL: Back in 2011 when I had the cancer scare, I decided to work on a tribute album to Jill Scott. I figure, celebrate people while they are still here, you know? Jill Scott has always been one of my favorite artists. It’s been about two years since I had the preventative surgery and I’m ready to put out the music, as a free download of course.

GMS: What is the song “Golden Lady” about?

SUBSTANTIAL: It basically tells the story of how I was first introduced to Jill Scott’s music, and how it influenced me over the years.

Tonedeff – ‘Glutton’ EP (Polymer 1/4) [Download + Tracklisting + Artwork]

I have known Tonedeff for years. An MC with incredible technical ability, style and delivery, as well as a great producer, graphic artist, animator and web designer, he has been killing verses and producing tracks with my crew The PLAGUE for the past decade, from the efamm album, to songs like “Most High”,  “Alive” and the classic Plague anthem “Drugz”.  On the verge of releasing 4 EP’s, which will combine like Voltron to form his sophomore album “Polymer“, the first installment, “Glutton” is available above. If you are new to the QN5 movement, read on for some background on the man behind the ‘curtains’, QN5 Music founder Tonedeff
