Seed x Nottz - No Way in Hell (Album)

Last week MCMI’s LR Blitzkrieg, Keith “Wildchild” Middleton, GMS and MrMecc attended an advance listening party for Seed X Nottz – No Way in Hell featuring the Bad Seed and produced by Nottz, atIMI Studios in Manhattan. The project brings the BK-VA duo of Seed & Nottz back together again, giving you another dose of the hypnotic hip hop serum they concocted years ago with songs like For the Kids, Uhhnnh, Would You Luh Me. The pair sounded great together back in the day, but then went their separate ways for quite awhile. Both released a plethora of songs with other artists and 20 years later Seed announced that he was going to retire as an MC.

But before retiring Seed dropped his “final” album Coreyography, featuring one joint produced by Nottz, Belt Off (Official Video). I’m sure if someone asked if he would drop another album he answered “No way in hell,” but the song knocked so hard that it inspired the two to talk about possibly, just maybe, recording another project together.

Fast forward and we are sitting in a room listening to No Way In Hell. The room is filled more with friends, family and real MCees than Industry, which is fitting, because if you know Seed or Nottz, there is nothing industry or contrived about either of them. As Seed and his daughter Boopy hosted the event, playing some tracks twice at our request, one thing was incredibly clear: this project was definitely worth the wait.

The concept is that the album is narrated by a female disc jockey broadcasting over W-HELL 66.6FM radio. Seed tells us he was inspired by the way the cult classic gang movie WARRIORS was narrated.

No Way In Hell starts off with the politically charged lead single “The Devil’s In The White House.”

Then there’s the “Belt Off Remix”, featuring Rockness Monsta (of Heltah Skeltah) and NapsNdreds. As Seed tells it, Rock was originally set to appear on “The Devil,” but it just felt right to have him on the revamped “Belt Off.”

“I decided it would be doper to hear him on there due to the subject matter,” Seed says. “As a fan, I wanted to hear Rock take his belt off and whoop some ass. And as far as Naps goes, dude’s my new favorite rapper. Period.”

Other standouts include the relationship drama of “Pretty Little Liar” featuring Tiye Phoenix, the super-funky “Yellow Lights” featuring Sauce Money, and the verbal middle finger Bad Mood.” And when put together, they form one of the year’s best rap releases. Hopefully it doesn’t take another 20 years for these two to drop another project.

No Way in Hell which also boasts guests appearances from Sauce Money and DJ Total Eclipse (X-Ecutioners), is available now through all major digital retailers and streaming platforms via Crisis Center Collective!

If you are in NYC you can attend the NO WAY IN HELL Album Release Party tonight at The Delancey, part of the Rock Da House series, presented by Doc Ahk, Mic Handz and DJ Toshi. The line up is sick, admission is free and there’s drink specials early.

MCMI REPORT

Bad Seed and Nottz are back with a collaborative album called No Way In Hell and the first single Sunday Morning ft DJ Total Eclipse has just hit the airwaves.

Bad Seed first teamed up with Nottz  to produce two Hip Hop classics in 1999 “For the Kids” and “Uhhnnh”, both of which did incredible sales for indie releases, the latter making it to Funk Flex 60 Minutes of Funk Vol IV: The Mixtape. After signing to a major (Warner) that then shelved their entire Hip Hop roster, Seed was sour to the industry for awhile, but released several notable independent albums over the years, remaining so-called “underground“, although some records such as Yankee Fitted featuring Mims and Talib Kweli off the album Intelligently Ignant, bubbled up slightly into the mainstream consciousness.

In 2016, Seed dropped Coreyography, which was set to be his last album, his farewell tour. After trying some acting, writing and directing, I think Seed was done with rap, perhaps feeling there was no way in hell he was going to drop another album. But the lead single “Belt Off” reunited Corey with Nottz and the results were amazing (video). The rekindling of their professional relationship led to this new producer/MC project No Way in Hell by SEED X NOTTZ.

For those unfamiliar with the Grammy Award winning producer’s work, Nottz has produced tracks for Busta Rhymes, the Notorious B.I.G, Fat Joe, Rah Digga, M.O.P, Exhibit, Snoop Dogg, Scarface, 50 Cent Method Man, Ghostface, Drake and Ne-yo just to name a few. He also works with more independent artists such as Krumbsnatcha, Apathy, Evidence and Sean Price. For his full discography, go here.

The first single off the project is “Sunday Morning” available now on Bandcamp. The Bad Seed hasn’t lost a step and Nottz beats are always bangin’ so we know this album is going to be tough!!

Let us know what you think of the track and the video and let us know, are you as amped as we are to hear this Seed X Nottz project? Also, what is your favorite Bad Seed or Nottz record? See you in the comments. Enjoy.

What more can be said about this legendary MC, friend, father and true artist, who did a lot for Hip Hop, fellow artists and the battle rap game that hasn’t been said already? The friends and family of PH aka PUMPKINHEAD have dedicated ourselves to keeping his legacy alive, musically and in support of his seeds. The events are packed with great music from incredible artists, but are also a great time to reconnect with fam, remember PH and toast to those who are gone but not forgotten, as many good brothers and sisters have transcended in recent years.

PH MEMORIAL SHOW: Immortal Technique, Apathy, Dwellas, Nems, DNA, Charlie Clips

Salute to EVERYBODY on the bill (and those not on the bill), because everyone is donating their time whether promoting, working the event or performing onstage. Previous memorial shows featured a gazillion artists, who were all PH’s friends and musical collaborators, but with so many on the stage each artist got very little shine in the few minutes allotted. This year we scaled it back a bit, so that the line up will not be the same every show and the artists have more time to pay homage with their musical renditions.

Shouts to Doc Ahk who did much of the legwork, booking and promotions, the flyer itself and is one of the best event promoters and stage managers in New York. The show is going to be incredible – of course. IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE will inspire, motivate and incite. APATHY joining us is a new treat. The CELLA DWELLAS are definitely a hometown favorite. While notorious for their battle rap careers, this is an awesome opportunity to hear artists like NEMS, DNA, CHARLIE CLIPS and Team HOMI flex their material, a countermeasure to the mumble rap music movement (YOU WILL HEAR ACTUAL WORDS! LOL) and represents 100% REAL HIP HOP.

These will be available at the event – while supplies last!!

As for my crew, The PLAGUE? … hell yeah, we will do our thing! Not about to let anybody upstage us, LOL. The BAD SEED is rocking joints from his new project SEED x NOTTZ, produced by NOTTZ obviously and that is all I need to know. Seed with the verses, Nottz with the beats. Let’s go!

Me (GMS), Wild Child, LR Blitzkrieg, PackFM, MrMecc and Tonedeff, plus Poison Pen (who reps Team Homi, Stronghold and The Plague) and DJ DP ONE are coming with some classics, but also some brand new material, which has never been performed before. All in honor of our fallen champion, the Underground King, PH aka PUMPKINHEAD!

Other DJ’s ECLIPSE, TOSHI & JOE BODEGA will keep the party rockin’ before, after and in between sets and the whole night will be hosted by EOW (End of the Weak) so this night is going to be extra special!

MCMI REPORT: Bad Seed Drops Final Album ‘COREYOGRAPHY’

Bad Seed Drops Final Album 'COREYOGRAPHY'

Bad Seed Drops Final Album ‘COREYOGRAPHY’

After a brief hiatus from rap to work on some films and a web series, Corey Pierson, aka Bad Seed is back with what he calls one final album. Inspired by the loss of his close friend and crew member Robert PH Diaz last year, Seed decided to toss his hat int he ring one last time. This time it’s personal. Executive produced by PH, Bad Seed brings you COREYOGRAPHY.

The first single off the album is BELT OFF, produced by NOTTZ, for which a video will be dropping shortly. If that track is any indication, fans are not going to be disappointed by this new album. With beats by NottzMarco Polo, Will Tell and other dope producers, this is definitely one of his finest works.

After listening to an advance copy of the album, I have to say one of my personal favorite tracks is Are They OK, produced by Tone Jonez, about losing so many of our favorite artists recently, from Prince to Phife, and wondering about Sade, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan and other musical treasures. ‘Keep Bouncin‘, produced by Dr, No, is a tight ‘down the line‘ track, with Seed, Mic Handz and Mims, spittin’ bars over a hot beat.

Bad Seed Drops Final Album 'COREYOGRAPHY'

Then there are concept songs ‘Django Unfiltered, about feeling like a slave to our 9 to 5, F*ck Cancer, about losing loved ones to the cursed disease. All in all it is a very well rounded album, giving us just the right balance meaningful content and hard beats and rhymes. At first because of the title, ‘Coreyography’, I thought it would be more autobiographical, but I see now, it actually touches on different things that Seed feels strongly about, different sides of Corey.

In the song ‘5 Minutes’, Seed airs out his feelings about the old Makin’ Records crew, which had differences and went their separate ways long ago. He references “307”, meaning 307 Clinton, which was the old Makin’ headquarters, in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Half way through the song, the beat changes and the late great PH drops some poignant lyrics, mentioning Makin’ Records and his transition to partner in MCMI Records, years later.

The album drops July 8th, on all digital outlets…iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon – all the usual suspects. The single is available on those outlets as well.
