MCMI REPORT: Tribute to Robert PH Diaz at Park Slope's FABULOUS 5th AVENUE FAIR

Rapper Wordsworth of EMC pays homage to his friend PH, on the corner of 5th Ave & Robert PH Diaz Way.

The late great rapper Robert “PH” Diaz aka Pumpkinhead, who passed away less than a  year ago from gall-bladder related health problems, represented Park Slope, Brooklyn, all his life. Even when he migrated to Staten Island and New Jersey, he always claimed Park Slope as his home, often shouting out the formerly socio-economically mixed neighborhood, that in recent times has become more and more gentrified, in his music. Then in the early 2000’s PH did a mixtape series (Park Slope Rennaisance Vol. 1 & 2) and had a song called Park Slope on his Beautiful Mind EP (Third Earth Music). PH visited his hometown often, doing shows, parties and charity events at the now closed Southpaw, Voodoo Lounge and SRB (now Analog). And shortly before his ultimate departure, Robert returned to Park Slope one last time, with his two sons, to show them the block “where daddy grew up”.

So it is extremely fitting for that block on De Graw Street, between 4th & 5th Avenue, to be co-named “Robert PH Diaz Way“. And it is also fitting that this year’s FABULOUS 5th AVENUE FAIR in Park Slope, will include a Musical Tribute to PH aka PUMPKINHEAD, on the corner of 3rd St & 5th Avenue, beginning at 1pm. DJ GMS will play a set of PH’s best music, including songs about Park Slope. There will also be guest performances by MCMI Artists and friends, including HYDRA (Keith WildChild Middleton, GMS & LR Blitzkrieg), Chordz Cordero, the MarXman, Qaasim & Khalil Middleton, Mic Handz and Jay Lonzo. The first time Pumpkinhead, GMS, LR Blitzkrieg & Keith WildChild ever performed together was at the FABULOUS 5th AVENUE FAIR in the 90’s when they were just teenagers. The friends would go on to found the crew The Plague and later form the brand MCMI.

The DJ Booth will be set up in front of The Gate on 3rd Street. The party will start off with classic dance music brought to you by Baby Loves Disco, with DJ MIKEY PALMS and Mr. Metaphor from Brooklyn Academy on the mic, from 11:30 – 1pm. The MCMI / PH Tribute set will go from 1 to 3pm, followed by DJ TOP SPEED, who will play classics honoring David Bowie, Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest & Prince, until the fair is over. Classic PH albums & mixtapes, tee shirts, posters and other collectibles will be available behind the DJ booth.

So come out to Park Slope this Sunday, enjoy the fair, check out the music on the corner of 3rd Street and you can also walk down 5th Avenue and take a pic under the newly unveiled street sign on the corner of De Graw St & 5th Ave, as we continue to “Rock Rock On …”.

MCMI Report: Jay Lonzo – Live! From Brooklyn (Official Music Video) #MCMI

MCMI Report: Jay Lonzo – Live! From Brooklyn (Official Music Video) #MCMI – Newcomer Jay Lonzo drops a couple of introductory verses over a Statik Selectah/Mac Miller/ Terminology track. I have to put the MCMI stamp of approval on this one. Full disclosure: Jay Lonzo is the son of a friend of mine. I helped him record his first freestyle for Soundcloud not too long ago. He has tremendous talent. His songwriting is excellent as well. Hooks, concepts, storylines, not what you expect from a 15 year old. I told him to keep honing his skills, keep the right team around him and in a year or two he would be a beast.

MCMI Report: Jay Lonzo - Live! From Brooklyn

Well, Jay is not trying to wait that long! In only a few months he crafted this banger, recorded it with the help of the homie Marc Bars (aka Mr. Metaphor from Brooklyn Academy), got with his team of like-minded individuals and shot this video. AmbrosiaForHeads has already branded him “the next great Brooklyn MC” and says

“One listen to his song, “Live! From Brooklyn,” … reveals an artist who sounds like he’s put in years of work”

Well, although he is young, Lonzo actually has put in years of work. Work writing in the pad, listening to the greats, learning from his pops, (who rhymes and sings himself, but keeps it on the low), working with MC’s, producers, photographers and video directors and getting knowledge from everywhere he can. That’s how he can drop gems like

How come, ain’t no MC’s like Malcom, Practice what you preach ain’t preachin’ inside ya albums?”

and

“Just because you post up with a vest doesn’t mean that you’re iron proof.”

On the set of his video, directed, shot and edited by by Jay, Ezru and Kodagenic, I saw that he had assembled a formidable team, friends his age, (The Goodz Productions, J Da Liberator, Fresh The Prophet) who are positive, creative and about their business. It was great to see Mom and Dad there encouraging Jay to follow his dreams. I think a strong foundation of family will help this promising MC stay grounded, avoiding the common pitfalls of the streets and the music industry.

From the sound of what he’s spittin’ in this video, I’d say the wait is over – Jay Lonzo has arrived! You can expect a lot of heat from this kid. You can quote me on that.
