MEDINA GREEN – SAVE THE CHILDREN – The EP

MEDINA GREEN MC DcQ, also known as “Ilias Bey”, began his music career at 17, in a group I first saw rocking’ at the legendary Lyricist Lounge in the 90’s, as the Urban Thermo Dynamics or UTD’s for short. Singles like “My Kung Fu” and “Manifest Destiny”, dropped on Payday Records  quickly garnered underground respect. This was also the first time people heard the lyrics and vocals of fellow group member Mos Def (yes, he was always singing, even back then). UTD’s had a good run, Mos came out with his solo work and shortly after DcQ emerged with a new group, a larger collective called Medina Green. They had some great joints, most notably the classic “Crosstown Beef”.

After years of touring the world as an independent artist, opening for “De La Soul”, “BlackStar”, “Talib Kweli”, and “Mos Def” and on the public speaking circuit under his pseudonym “Illias”, DcQ is back with a new project which not only is dope beats and rhymes but promotes a positive social message, SAVE THE CHILDREN – The EP.

dcq1While the title track and one other are solo DcQ joints, the EP features other members of Medina Green (including Yaslin Bey -pka- Mos Def) and some special guests, like SADAT X and JOELL ORTIZ. The beats on this project are rough, rugged and raw, produced by Shawneci Icecold and Ayatollah, my favorites being the title track, “Stop The Madness” and the closer “Party Done”. The whole project is extremely well put together and amazingly is a FREE DOWNLOAD available here.

MOS DEF headlines Fort Greene Festival (Complete Line Up)

FORT GREENE FESTIVAL FLYER

Last year’s festival was amazing. There was so much talent showcased and celebrated. I can think of a few such as GC & Soul Mafia, the headliner Common, and Mr. Mecca, to name a few. I have video footage of last year’s event, but we didn’t have MCMIreport.com up and running yet, so I never used it and it is sitting in the “vault”. MCMI will definitely be out in force for this year’s festival, so next week we can bless y’all with footage of some of the performances and exclusive interviews.

This year’s FORT GREENE FESTIVAL is SATURDAY JUNE 25th, 2011 all day at Fort Greene Park, in Brooklyn, NY.

Here is a description of the Fort Greene Festival for those who don’t know.

Fort Greene festival is a two-day music, film, and cultural festival that brings over 10,000 people to Fort Greene to celebrate one of Brooklyn’s most vibrant and artistic enclaves. Fort Greene Festival provides local performing arts and community media programs that reflects Fort Greene’s diverse community. The festival serves as a platform to provide and support the community’s creative progress. Fort Greene Fest not only celebrates Fort Greene’s rich culture, but respects the very ground where it will take place. The festival is working closely with ConEdison and National Grid to make the event as green as possible.

2011 Line Up:

MOS DEFMOS DEF

Taking a cue from the Afrocentric stylings of the Native Tongues crew, which included De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and Andres Titus, Mos Def has emerged as one of the more conscientious voices of new school hip-hop, alongside the likes of Common, Outkast, Goodie Mob and The Roots, to name just a few.
