Jean Grae – “Ho X 3” (free Christmas EP)

Jean Grae Ho X 3

Look, we all know Jean Grae raps (I mean like really, rapitty rap, she’s f*ckin’ lyrical), but … this is not about that. You might not know that Jean can really sing, it’s all her singing on this project, but … it’s not really about that either.

Well then, how to explain? … I’ll just take Jean’s own words off of Facebook:

Jean Grae gifts us on Christmas again this year. Jamming all the fuckery into a tiny project, like she’s got her hand up a chickens butt. You know the routine. Some of your favorite songs get a once over and a reach around. It’s “Ho X 3″. There’s kids, rohypnol and a bass solo from Jerome.

P.S. If you want to hear some more holiday f*ckery from Jean Grae, jam out to Hellpit Faeries “Jingle Fucking Bells EP” from last year.

Jean Grae – Kill Screen (Video)

kill screen
GODDAMN Jean Grae is dope! One of the best MC’s I know AND an amazing producer ta boot, awhile back under the pseudonym RunRun Shaw Ms.Grae was really into her production but in recent years she has kinda step away from it…with this self produced track lets hope she’s also back on the beats.
Here is an excerpt of her interview with MTVhive:

You produced the song yourself. What sort of vibe were you going for?

Something eerie [and] sparse that allowed for a lot of room for wordplay; a lot of room to breathe on the track. I look at beats like a canvas: Sometimes you want a lush, full landscaped background, other times it deserves to be something more minimalistic. I wanted to paint on a minimal canvas.

Pharoahe Monch Still Standing f Jill ScottThis has to be one of the best songs/videos of the year and it’s only February! I am not saying that lightly. This record has so many elements of musical perfection, lyrical inflection. And if the song is “ear candy”, then the visuals are “eye candy” as well. Where to begin.

First of all, press play and listen to the song as you are reading this. The song blends genres so well, starting off with a classical feel of strings, French horn and timpani. When the beat drops, the drum kit is so deep and soulful, kicks so hard, claps and snaps so crispy, your head is instantly nodding to the funk fueled Hip Hop. Pharoahe slides right in with flow, immediately rhyming “Lord Jesus” with “Chest just might freeze up” referring to his lifetime struggle with Asthma.

While this is going on the screen is filled with images of a young boy playing in the park, the photography vivid enough to make every tree feel familiar. He wears a double breasted vintage leather jacket, the kind no child in present day wears, but I have known Pharoahe to be partial to a double breasted jacket or two. Hmm… is it Pharoahe as a child? What is the story, the metaphor, the hidden symbolism?

The director creates a movie with lenses and sunlight, back and forth between Pharoahe gasping for breath in the studio and young Pharoahe climbing a tree. A studio which has the look and feel of a church, plus that’s where the singers are taking us to. Filled with musicians – Melamachinko singing and Jean Grae, just being there, smoking, sharing the moment.Pharoahe Monch Still Standing f Jill Scott

Jill Scott steps to the mic, adding to the background vocals for a moment, then goes in and starts to blow. The plushness of the beat, the touching scene of a boy climbing the tree, the rhythm and flow, the soulful notes and spiritual words coming from Jill Scott are almost too much to bear.  But you can’t stop looking at the screen.

Who is the girl? Why does no one but Pharoahe seem to see that she is in the room? Is she a spirit? Perhaps an angel? The angel of death come to claim the asthmatic MC or is she there for the boy? It is both surreal and nostalgic at the same time, like when characters glide across the screen in a Spike Lee movie.

The Bad Seed: 6th Man Radio Premier (Audio)

The Bad Seed

So ya boy Bad Seed -aka- NiggalisCage has started something the world of Hip Hop radio was definitely missing: An “Adult Contemporary Hip Hop & RnB” radio show. What does that mean? Well, right now mainstream urban radio is super youth driven. You mostly hear everything marketed to 11 to 19 year olds. Then you have a few underground radio stations and shows and those tend to play brand new independent artists and nothing else.

So what’s missing? How about old school and new music that grown folks like to listen to? Some of it might be “underground” but a lot of it will be mainstream as well. Some songs appeal to adults as well as young kids, but let’s face it – most of us are pretty tired of hearing the same 7 songs on repeat all day, with mostly immature content, nothing grown and sexy, no classics, no positivity, etc.

So where can you go to hear that good-good? Welcome to 6th Man Radio! The show lives on GetYourzWorld.com

This episode is sort of a pilot, a test run to iron out the kinks. It should hold you for now and then starting in March the show will air every Saturday, 7:30 to 9:30pm. The premise and format of the show is : ADULT CONTEMPORARY HIP HOP/OLD
SCHOOL R&B/ AND 80’S ERA MTV MUSIC. Seed has a co-host, the lovely Nadine Michel and two special guests, MIMS and JEAN GRAE call in the show for this first episode.
