Skull N Tones x Do You Mind

Skull N Tones is a DJ/production team, art and international dance movement, equally into Hip Hop and the EDM Dance music scene. You may have seen some of their beat videos on youtube, or the official music video for their track New World Order. This unofficial remix, Skull N Tones x Do You Mind, is based on the DJ Khaled song and is made with the Club DJ in mind.

The founders of Skull N Tones collective, Jarret & Bleu, began their career by making instrumentals for underground hip hop acts, such as Brooklyn Academy and Steven King.  Years later, the group transitioned into trap and gritty-style EDM when they partnered with Amsterdam-based clothing company, Nuff Said.  The team performs with masks using their iconic logo.  Their current mission is to create a platform where people can lose their identity and let their souls show by dancing their faces off.

Juggernaut War Party

Juggernaut War Party

Enter the JUGGERNAUT! Founded by frontman Qaasim Middleton (American Idol, Naked Brothers Band and HBO’s Music In Me), Juggernaut War Party is quite a collective, consisting of Qaasim, (lead vocals, guitar), his brother Khalil (vocals, MPC), lead guitarists Jonah Hudson, Emmet Sher and Joseph Deadwiley, drummer Andres Valbuena, keyboardists Jack Gruber and Francisco Haye, with Ethan Cohn and Paul Johnson on bass.

Juggernaut War Party

You may remember Qaasim from his awesome run on American Idol Season 14, when he performed with Chris Brown and Pitbull and was lavished with praise from J-Lo, Harry Connick Jr. & Keith Urban. Since his amazing run on Idol, where he finished in the Top 8,  Qaasim has been quietly developing his material, working on his debut album with his Hip Hop/Funk/Rock fusion band Qaasim & the Juggernaut War Party: Children of The Plague (“Juggernaut War Party” or “JWP” for short).

Juggernaut War Party

The Juggernaut War Party concept was birthed at AFROPUNK BATTLE OF THE BANDS BROOKLYN, on June 22nd, 2015, when Qaasim and his bandmates entered the contest to showcase their skills and original Rock/Rap/Funk fusion material. They did extremely well for a brand new group, making it to the very end, eliminated only in the Finals. It was debatable, but all of the groups rocked out that year, so the band chalked it up to an awesome debut experience.

Juggernaut War Party

Right after that, Qaasim did his last show on the American Idol Tour at the Beacon Theater August 5th, 2015, then become a free agent. Since then he has been in the studio with the band, recording and polishing their sound for their debut release. Juggernaut did their second show, October 10th, 2015, opening for Rakim and Corey Glover at the RESTORATION ROCKS MUSIC FESTIVAL.

Juggernaut War Party

This year, Qaasim & The Juggernaut War Party are back with a vengeance! They entered the AFROPUNK BROOKLYN BATTLE once again and performed such a striking, memorable set, that even though another band was eventually voted the winner, the judges gave JWP 2nd Place and decided that this year the top TWO bands were going to go through, to perform at Afropunk Brooklyn 2016! They couldn’t front on the War Party and wanted to bring their amazing sound (and fanbase) to the Afropunk festival. Juggernaut truly is the unstoppable force!

Juggernaut War Party

Come out to watch Qaasim & The Juggernaut War Party tear down the stage August 27th on the Green Stage, from 1:45 – 2:15pm at the AFROPUNK BROOKLYN FESTIVAL 2016, sharing the stage with artists such as Jonelle Monae, Cee-lo Green, TV on the Radio, George Clinton, Ice Cube, Flying Lotus, Saul Williams, Tyler the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, plus members of Bad Brains, Fishbone, and Living Colour, just to name a few! It is going to be lit!

MCMI REPORT: DE LA SOUL – DRAWN featuring Little Dragon

De La Soul - Drawn

De La emailed me this song in advance of their upcoming release. Rather than talk about the song I’ll just let them tell it.

Hey Y’all,

Here’s another new song for you before the album “AND THE ANONYMOUS NOBODY” comes out on August 26th.  It’s called “Drawn” and it features Little Dragon.  Yukimi Nagano from Little Dragon describes the song as, “a dreamy journey about not taking anything for granted in life. About love and being lost in something dangerously good.”

De La Soul

One thing I will tell you is that most of the song is a musical intro (a song in itself) from Little Dragon, before the beat finally drops at the 4 minute mark and De la starts rapping. It’s not something that would be traditionally released as a single. When you are 100% independent and in control of your art, you can do that.

MCMI REPORT: Bad Seed Drops Final Album ‘COREYOGRAPHY’

Bad Seed Drops Final Album 'COREYOGRAPHY'

Bad Seed Drops Final Album ‘COREYOGRAPHY’

After a brief hiatus from rap to work on some films and a web series, Corey Pierson, aka Bad Seed is back with what he calls one final album. Inspired by the loss of his close friend and crew member Robert PH Diaz last year, Seed decided to toss his hat int he ring one last time. This time it’s personal. Executive produced by PH, Bad Seed brings you COREYOGRAPHY.

The first single off the album is BELT OFF, produced by NOTTZ, for which a video will be dropping shortly. If that track is any indication, fans are not going to be disappointed by this new album. With beats by NottzMarco Polo, Will Tell and other dope producers, this is definitely one of his finest works.

After listening to an advance copy of the album, I have to say one of my personal favorite tracks is Are They OK, produced by Tone Jonez, about losing so many of our favorite artists recently, from Prince to Phife, and wondering about Sade, Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan and other musical treasures. ‘Keep Bouncin‘, produced by Dr, No, is a tight ‘down the line‘ track, with Seed, Mic Handz and Mims, spittin’ bars over a hot beat.

Bad Seed Drops Final Album 'COREYOGRAPHY'

Then there are concept songs ‘Django Unfiltered, about feeling like a slave to our 9 to 5, F*ck Cancer, about losing loved ones to the cursed disease. All in all it is a very well rounded album, giving us just the right balance meaningful content and hard beats and rhymes. At first because of the title, ‘Coreyography’, I thought it would be more autobiographical, but I see now, it actually touches on different things that Seed feels strongly about, different sides of Corey.

In the song ‘5 Minutes’, Seed airs out his feelings about the old Makin’ Records crew, which had differences and went their separate ways long ago. He references “307”, meaning 307 Clinton, which was the old Makin’ headquarters, in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn. Half way through the song, the beat changes and the late great PH drops some poignant lyrics, mentioning Makin’ Records and his transition to partner in MCMI Records, years later.

The album drops July 8th, on all digital outlets…iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, Amazon – all the usual suspects. The single is available on those outlets as well.

Qaasim & the Juggernaut War Party

Over the past year, since his amazing run on Season 15 of American Idol, where he finished in the Top 8, Qaasim Middleton has been quietly developing his material, working on his debut album with his Hip Hop/Funk/Rock fusion band Qaasim & the Juggernaut War Party.

Tonight, that band will be put to the test, as they compete in the AFRO PUNK Battle of the Bands, a black rock contest where the winning band gets to open for the headliners at the AFRO PUNK FEST, in Brooklyn, NYC.

Qaasim & the Juggernaut War Party

As we saw on Idol, Qaasim has a huge range of styles that he can do. He can wild out on Rock classics like The Beatles ‘Come Together’, bring the ‘Uptown Funk’ , can also get quiet and soulful, with just his voice and an accoustic guitar, or give you barz and wordplay with a Hip Hop verse. But which is the true Qaasim?

Being that he sings, dances, raps and produces his own Hip Hop tracks, the question is, which one will we see tonight? The Entertainer, the Rocker, the MC, the Joker? Or all of the above? We will have to see for ourselves tonight at the Afro Punk Battle of the Bands, in his hometown of Brooklyn, NY.
