Pharoahe Monch x Jean Grae BKLYN Bowl show

LYRICS TO GOPharoahe Monch Jean Grae show

On may 10th Tamir Brown and Lyrics To Go put on a great concert at Brooklyn Bowl headlined by Pharoahe Monch and Jean Grae. Hosted by the lovely Aja Monet, the show went on without a hitch with amazing opening performances by The Yume Experiment, Cheif Justice, Dysfunkshunal Familee (Happy Birthday DJ Bazzarro!) and my favorite opening act of the night YC the cynic.

full story and pics after the jump….

After the opening acts, many drinks, some politicking, and some amazing DJ sets by DJs DP One, & Jay Period, Mr. Len took the stage and played a crazy set filled with energizing rock music to get the crowed hyped for Jean Grae. Being a typical New York crowed it took awhile and even when Jean did come on stage she wasn’t satisfied. “what the fuck is wrong with you guys? you take shots of NyQuil before the show?” But sleepy eyed crowed woke right up as soon as the beat dropped and she spoke her first few lines of her intro.  After back to back hit songs off her soon to be released new album “Cake or Die” she decided to call up two female audience members for a “lesbian threesome”! They bumped and grind-ed her legs as she stood there arms folded, looking cool as fuck. (hilarious!). Ms. Grae’s stage show was flawless.

During a brief intermission the crowd was treated to a surprise performance by Brand Nubian’s  Sadat X, who blessed the crowed with a few freestyles and his classics “Slow Down” and “Punks Jump Up

After Sadat it was time for Pharoahe who took to the stage backed up by his X-Ecutioner Dj Boogie Blind wearing the gas mask he wore on the cover of his new album W.A.R. and attacked the audience with an audio assault that only he could pull off. Hit after hit after hit off his three critically acclaimed albums W.A.R., Minority Report, and Desire kept the crowd in a frenzy nodding their heads while simultaneously attempting to mouth the words and keep up with his wordplay. Know this, I don’t know ANYONE who has better backup singers than Pharoahe. Showtime and Mela Machinko are the SHIIIIIT! Easily two of the best singers I’ve ever heard they brought already incredible songs like “Clap“, “Shine” and “Desire” to a new level.  You had to be there to comprehend.

And as if all this wasn’t enough on its own, at the very end of his set Pharoahe introduces hip-hop legend O.C. and they go on to perform “Fudge Pudge” and “Time’s up“  Crazy! At the very end, just when you thought they were all out of bullets, he brings Jean back to the stage to perform “Assassins“, a song also featuring Royce the 5’9. And although Nickel-nine wasn’t there Jean and Monch lived up to the name of the track. Not only on this song, but throughout the night as a whole. They killed it and sent the crowd home screaming bloody murder.
