Jason Spirit - You Make Me Shine

MCMI Report: Jason Spirit – You Make Me Shine – debut single and video

Although I usually write about Hip Hop music, like most Hip Hop heads its not the only type of music I listen to. As a musician myself, who grew up on Folk, Classical, Jazz, Funk, Soul, Blues and Classic Rock, I have very eclectic musical tastes. As a producer and songwriter, I know a great song, regardless of genre. As a flautist (oh, you didn’t know? … check me on this track Freedom, with Chordz Cordero), I also can appreciate a good melody. Well Jason Spirit, a singer / songwriter of incredible talent and passion, embodies all of the above.

MCMI Report: Jason Spirit - You Make Me ShineI guess I decided to write about Jason Spirit, because of his unique style, the likes of which you don’t come across often. His songs are incredibly soulful, yet universal. The Brooklyn native’s lyrics are honest and real. And he has the guts to break out a flute solo in the middle of what could potentially be a pop record! There are very few popular singers who also play an instrument and take extended solo breaks on the middle of a song. In a performance? Sure. But on the record? We used to hear it all the time. That’s something we are missing these days and its a sound for sore ears.MCMI Report: Jason Spirit - You Make Me Shine

As is his flute. His playing falls somewhere between Ian Anderson and Hubert Laws. His music has a Jamiroqui meets The Police feel to it, soul-stirring and danceable at the same time. His singing – all Jason. Although he has done some writing, producing and playing for various bands and on some dance records in the past, this is his solo debut. It’s also his first music video, directed by Jarrett Robinson (RhythmandBleu), who really brings out Jason’s cool spirit (pun intended), with breathtaking outdoor visuals.

You can hear this song plus three others he is previewing, on his website jasonspiritmusic.com and catch him live at the world famous Blue Note jazz club in NYC, on January 29th, at 12-midnight. Advance tickets only $10, more the day of the show.
