MCMI Presents … MEDZ – “S.M.S” Produced by MJ DRAMA (TrackOfficials)
Medz is a young MC out of Brooklyn NY, who was brought to the MCMI table by PH. Forming Grandson Entertainment with his partner Layz, who promotes, directs, handles production and marketing, Medz has been building his name with songs and videos via Soundcloud and Youtube for a while now. Impressed with what we saw and heard we decided to re-release “S.M.S”, as a buzz record on MCMI and are making plans to do more projects with Medz in the future. We asked Medz some questions so the world can get to know him and learn a little about Grandson Entertainment, while you enjoy the music. You’ll find the Interview after the jump.

MCMI: Where are you from?
Medz: Brooklyn, New York. Marine Park and Flatbush, specifically.
When did you start rhyming?
In the 8th grade at first jokingly, but then in the 9th grade taking it seriously.
What does the name “Medz” mean or come from?

What does the name “Medz” mean or come from?
My boy hit me up like ”Yo you should have your name be Medz, Medz is a dope name”.  He’s Jamaican, so he had that catchy tone when he said “Medz”. At first he was like ”and you could play it off and say it derives from your real name” (my real name is Mohammed), but i didn’t wanna play it off or nothing. I did like the name and it seemed really representational, because this was during the “hip hop is dead”, pre-2009 days, so “Medz” is like medicine for music.
Tell us about Grandson Entertainment.
Its Medz and Layz. As a 2 man collective we’ve learned to do it all: produce, make videos, graphic design, rap, direct, create scripts and skits, sing in some lights, and play instruments.
What is Layz role in the group?
He’s a producer, videographer, battle rapper, agent, manager among other things.
Who are your influences?
As a rapper its Eminem, Slaughterhouse. For Layz, as a director, Tarantino, musically, N.E.R.D, Odd Future, and of course Medz.
How did y’all meet, link up to do music?
We’ve been friends since 7th grade at lunch time doing little rap battles here and there. Then after junior high we linked up again, after he had heard I made music. He wanted to shoot my videos since he had been doing videos on his own prior. As we built more and more, we formed Grandson Entertainment.
Have you battled?
Yeah, in school and street battles, for respect, not in leagues like Grindtime or anything.
