DIRTBAG DAN: CADDY PH IMMORTAL (OFFICIAL VIDEO)

West Coast rapper / battler / comedian Dirtbag Dan has a great video out for “Caddy PH Immortal” a memorial for Robert “PH” Diaz and Robert “Cadalack Ron” Paulson, two of Dan’s Hip Hop peers who the world lost too soon.  Dirtbag battled both MC’s, Ron for Grind Time Now and PH for PoisonPenTV/URL, but behind the scenes they were friends and all three respected each other’s talents.

The video has Dan skateboarding thoughout Los Angeles lamenting about his friends and how their musical legacies not only immortalized them, but made him realize that he has wasted a lot of time (haven’t we all?) and it’s a race against the clock to get his music out and accomplish his life’s goals. Clips of Cadalack and PH, a beautiful mural of Ron and a street sign that reads “Robert ‘PH’ Diaz Way” bring the spirits of both Roberts into the video, which was directed by Kyle Gray and filmed by Jeff Hammerton. The song was produced by Rey Resurreccion, mixed and Mastered by Chris Paxton at Nexus Audio

Dirtbag Dan explained to HipHopDX about the personal significance of making this video:

“Caddy and PH had a lot more in common than most would assume. They were both battle rappers, but they were also respected musicians who personified the places they came from. They inspired. They left a legacy. To me, they’re immortal now. That’s what I wanted to write about.”

CADDY PH IMMORTAL by Dirtbag Dan (feat. Ichy the Killer) is available on itunes and on the artists BandCamp page. The full project 3RTYS drops 8/30/18.

Jay ARE (John Robinson + J Rawls) – Youth Culture Power (Sampler) Feat. Tiffany Paige

I will admit, when my long time friend and musical peer John Robinson sent me the link to this project, I didn’t really know what to make of it. It’s Soundcloud audio, so, is it a podcast? Not really, but there are conversations. So, is it an EP? Not really, but there are some songs.

The beats knock, the musical landscapes are incredible and Jay ARE are dropping serious barz (with a “z”) on us, but it’s not a traditional album format. Having had a few conversations about education myself (I am a 20+ year veteran of the public school system, as a teacher and recently became certified for administration), I knew it would be interesting to say the least and probably incredibly dope musically, so I gave it a thorough listen. The audio feast that ensued was so flavorful I had to go back for seconds and thirds.

Jay ARE (John Robinson + J Rawls) - Youth Culture Power (Sampler) Feat. Tiffany Paige

So what is it? Youth Culture Power is essentially several dope J Rawls produced, jazz-infused hip-hop tracks, blended with live instrumentation of the Liquid Crystal Project, over which the emcees rhyme poetics laced with the melodic tones of Tiffany Paige. This is merged with snippets of conversations from educators and scholars such as Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, Dr. Jocelyn Wilson, Martha Diaz, Dr. Bettina Love and Dr. Christopher Emdin, talking about attitudes towards students, the public school system and the current state of educating inner city youth.  This soundcloud player contains a sampler of the full project (Book + Album) that is on the way.

At times it feels like you are listening to some good talk radio on WNYC or NPR. At times it’s some revolutionary, hardcore yet intelligent Hip Hop, the likes of which you get from artists like Dead Prez or Common. Some of the music is simple boom bap, hard beats and MCees dropping science. Other tracks contain sweet melodies in hooks, reminiscent of Lauren Hill’s contrasting her singing voice with her and the other Fugees’ intricate lyricism. The end-result is ear candy – audio that is equally rich in it’s musical tapestry as it is intellectually and spiritually stimulating.

Jay ARE (John Robinson + J Rawls) - Youth Culture Power (Sampler) Feat. Tiffany Paige

Jay ARE consists of educators and hip-hop kids J Rawls and John Robinson turned musical maestros, who have merged their musical work with their educational theories. Their upcoming Book + Album project, Youth Culture Power promotes their philosophy on education: Youth Culture Pedagogy (YCP). The group  believes that their pedagogy can “maximize students’  full potential for success and promote lifelong engagement in learning,” so this is more than just music.

What more can be said about this legendary MC, friend, father and true artist, who did a lot for Hip Hop, fellow artists and the battle rap game that hasn’t been said already? The friends and family of PH aka PUMPKINHEAD have dedicated ourselves to keeping his legacy alive, musically and in support of his seeds. The events are packed with great music from incredible artists, but are also a great time to reconnect with fam, remember PH and toast to those who are gone but not forgotten, as many good brothers and sisters have transcended in recent years.

PH MEMORIAL SHOW: Immortal Technique, Apathy, Dwellas, Nems, DNA, Charlie Clips

Salute to EVERYBODY on the bill (and those not on the bill), because everyone is donating their time whether promoting, working the event or performing onstage. Previous memorial shows featured a gazillion artists, who were all PH’s friends and musical collaborators, but with so many on the stage each artist got very little shine in the few minutes allotted. This year we scaled it back a bit, so that the line up will not be the same every show and the artists have more time to pay homage with their musical renditions.

Shouts to Doc Ahk who did much of the legwork, booking and promotions, the flyer itself and is one of the best event promoters and stage managers in New York. The show is going to be incredible – of course. IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE will inspire, motivate and incite. APATHY joining us is a new treat. The CELLA DWELLAS are definitely a hometown favorite. While notorious for their battle rap careers, this is an awesome opportunity to hear artists like NEMS, DNA, CHARLIE CLIPS and Team HOMI flex their material, a countermeasure to the mumble rap music movement (YOU WILL HEAR ACTUAL WORDS! LOL) and represents 100% REAL HIP HOP.

PH MEMORIAL SHOW: Immortal Technique, Apathy, Dwellas, Nems, DNA, Charlie Clips

These will be available at the event – while supplies last!!

As for my crew, The PLAGUE? … hell yeah, we will do our thing! Not about to let anybody upstage us, LOL. The BAD SEED is rocking joints from his new project SEED x NOTTZ, produced by NOTTZ obviously and that is all I need to know. Seed with the verses, Nottz with the beats. Let’s go!

Me (GMS), Wild Child, LR Blitzkrieg, PackFM, MrMecc and Tonedeff, plus Poison Pen (who reps Team Homi, Stronghold and The Plague) and DJ DP ONE are coming with some classics, but also some brand new material, which has never been performed before. All in honor of our fallen champion, the Underground King, PH aka PUMPKINHEAD!

Other DJ’s ECLIPSE, TOSHI & JOE BODEGA will keep the party rockin’ before, after and in between sets and the whole night will be hosted by EOW (End of the Weak) so this night is going to be extra special!

MCMI REPORT: LR BLITZKRIEG – IN THESE STREETS feat MR. LIVE & UG

LR BLITZKRIEG – IN THESE STREETS feat MR. LIVE & UG

LR BLITZKRIEG - IN THESE STREETS feat MR. LIVE & UG

MCMI’s LR Blitzkrieg is back with his second single/video, “In These Streets”, featuring hip hop veterans, Mr. Live and U.G. (Cella Dwellas), off his forthcoming project, “Outta Nowhere” TBA.

The track bangs with hard-hitting production by U.G. (aka P90X). Mr. Live’s sets it off with simultaneous humor and gun bars:

“John Smith..Bringin’ a long fif..a couple of broadswords and a Tec with the wrong grip..a 30 Odd six, right body, the wrong ditch..a nigga way off you can tell by the strong twitch…”

U.G. of Cella Dwella fame also kills it and let’s us know:

“It’s UG and Blitz, Wu-Tang ain’t the only ones NOT to F–k with!”

Blitz is the clean up hitter and packs so many hard hitting punches into his 16, I don’t want to give too much away, but one line that could sum up the intentions of his verse is:

“Learn young’, I burn somethin’, You earned nothin’, y’all Taxed the game too long and our Return’s comin’…”

The video shot and edited by Mic Handz of Soul Mazonz, is a mad dash through the streets of Brooklyn, as Blitz and his like-minded MC friends chase “Lil” and “Yung”, played by Qaasim and Khalil Middleton (of the group Juggernaut War Party, and of television’s The Get Down, The Naked Brothers Band and American Idol). At the end of the video, ‘Krieg catches the youngsters and hands them CD’s from Busta Rhymes, Sean P (#RIP) and PH (#RIP), to give them examples of what real hip hop is. Like a Marvel Studios after credits scene, there is footage of the two MC’s excitedly reciting parts of Busta’s “Show Me What You Got” off of the Anarchy album.

The single was supposed to drop in March, but Blitz decided to bless y’all with a present on his birthday and leaked it himself on February 6th. It is available on SoundcloudBandcampiTunes, Amazon and all digital outlets worldwide!

Enjoy!

MCMI REPORT: Shabaam Sahdeeq drops new album! Guest stars galore!

MCMI REPORT: Shabaam Sahdeeq drops new album! Guest stars galore!

MCMI REPORT: Shabaam Sahdeeq drops new album! Guest stars galore!

Okay, I admit that headline was just to grab your attention. It could have read “SHABAAM SAHDEEQ IS BACK WITH A BANGER OF AN ALBUM WITH BEATS THAT ARE CRAZY AND FEATURING PLANET ASIA, MASTA ACE, MILANO CONSTANTINE, RAS KASS, EL GANT, J57, NICK WIZ, EL DA SENSEI & MORE!” True, that’s a little too many words for the title, lol, but it’s accurate!

Timeless: Of The Collection is Shabaam’s first album in 3 years and is the first in a Timeless album series in four or five parts to be released over the next two years. First let’s talk about the beats. Sahdeeq describes them as that

“dirty-sounding SP-1200/MPC sample type ish I love to spit to”

Producers on the album include J57 (Westside Gunn, Joey Bada$$), Nick Wiz (Rakim, Cella Dwellas), DJ Doom (Blacastan, Nutso), Icerocks (Meyhem Lauren) and Arcitype (Vinnie Paz, Ruste Juxx). The production itself will have you nodding before the rhymes even start. The hooks, many scratch choruses, some spoken, a few sung, are all catchy and keep the song in your head. Among the notable featured MC’s on the album are Planet Asia, Milano Constantine (D.I.T.C), Masta Ace, Ras Kass, El Da Sensei (Artifacts) and El Gant to name a few.

Lyrically? Shabaam is on his A-game. Metaphors, stories of the past, wordplay, realism, battle-raps, it’s all in there. These are not freestyle joints, but well constructed, concept songs that will have you nodding your head in agreement. Whether you have been a fan since the Rawkus days or are a new listener you will be not be disappointed.

The album is available for stream and immediate purchase via Bandcamp and Audiomack currently and will be available via iTunes and all other digital retailers on January 13th.

Stream/buy Timeless: Of The Collection from the Bandcamp or Stream via Audiomack
